Latin American Religions Essay

What are some major attributes of Latin American Catholicism? Identify and describe at least two distinctions and include how they are distinct from Catholicism elsewhere. The Central American War had changed the priorities of the Catholic Church in Latin America. In the 1980’s, the clergy’s had decided to go against the Catholic Church mainly the Vatican despite the various threats, and began to help the poor which were struggling for their equality and their rights. The Catholic activism was in support of the change; however, it did influence guerilla movements in certain parts of Latin America such as Nicaragua, Salvador, Guatemala. This had introduced moral and spiritual justification. â€Å"Throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, a wing of the church surfaced as a powerful ideological force in the struggle to end authoritarian regimes,† (Meade, T., 2010). In what ways have African religions influenced Latin American Catholicism? â€Å"Latinos are comprised of a great conglomeration of ethnicities, traditions, and customs, which are traditionally, expressed by a common language (Spanish) and religion (Catholocism). For instance, Latin American values and traditions received a great influence from Catholicism and indigenous beliefs. Similarly, African traditions also permeated the Latin American culture, especially in the Caribbean region. This unique syncretism between Catholicism, and indigenous and African traditions allowed the survival of folk traditions, which led to the creation of several healing approaches,† (www.egochicagoschools.com, 2012). Should Latin American Catholicism be considered polytheistic? Why or why not? There are various polytheistic religions that are practiced today. Many of the religions today outside of Catholicism believe in more than one God. However, the Catholics believe in one God and one God only. I do think the Catholicism needs to be consistent meaning the Catholicism that is being practices within Latin American needs to be the same everywhere else. Once others start to deviate from Catholicism then it begins to start a new religion and moves away from the beliefs of the Catholicism. Only the Vatican may assess and make changes within the Catholic Religions. How have churches fostered or hindered social changes in Latin America? After the civil war, Latin Americans had turned to other religions. For over 500 years, many Latin Americans were considered loyal to the Catholic religions. However, it quickly turned to be a stronghold to Protestants. In the Liberation area other religions had developed such as Evangelical and Pentecostal. These religions are very different from the Catholicism. These religions speak in tongue, rely on baptism, accept the Holy Spirit, and emotional rituals. With these new religions developing the social changes in Latin America does provide a much broader outlook on their beliefs. There are various groups or community gatherings within the particular religion. Each religion unites and brings together their faith and social aspects within their own community. How has Protestantism spread in Latin America in the past? Is it different than the factors that are promoting the current growth in Protestantism in this region? How and why? The Protestantism had spread in Latin America in the past due to the fact of various discrepancies within the Catholic Religion. For instance, in 1980’s, the Guatemalan’s had begun to change their beliefs and lean more to the Protestants. This was proven in 2005, when a massive amount of members of the Catholic Church had begun to leave the church as rapid growth. The new leading religion was the Pentecostal church. Many of the new religions were still created by using the Catholic religion as their foundation. The Life Of Saudi Arabia The life of Saudi Arabia is a culture that is different than any country and Region. Saudi Arabia is located in the middle east on the other side of the world over 860,000 miles away from the U. S. The most common language for Saudi Arabia is Arabic (6 million) the other two are are spoken by Saudi’s Nejdi Arabic (8 million) and the Persian Gulf(1. 5 million) Saudi Arabia has a religion than no other country has, there religion is Muslim anyone that doesn’t believe in Muslim has death penalty but their hasn’t been any recent confirmed reports about that in a couple of years.The last Christian that was there was told to leave Saudi Arabia in 1985. They only believe in one god that they call Allah, they pray three times a day, there religious for there holiday is Ramadan, It is a time when Muslims around the world focus on prayer, fasting, giving to charity, and religious devotion. The last third of Ramadan is a particularly holy period, th ey read the Quran which is similar to the bible. They aren’t allowed to celebrate Christmas or Easter .The police go around and make sure there isn’t any Christians there. Saudi Arabia is the world second largest country in the Asia. Its population is estimated to consisted of 16 million citizens and an additional 9 million registered foreign people and 2 million illegal immigrants. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was found by Abdul-Aziz Bin Saud known for his career as Ibn Saud. The Saudi government has been an absolute monarchy since its inception and it describes itself as being Islamic.Saudi Arabia is the birthplace of Islam and the kingdom is sometimes called â€Å"the land of the two holy mosques† in reference of Al-masjid al Haram(in Mecca),and Al-masjid al nabawi(in medina) the two holiest places in the Islam. Saudi Arabia has the second largest oil reserves which are concentrated largely in the Eastern Province. Oil accounts for more than 95% of exports and 70% of government revenue although the share of the non-oil economy has been growing recently.This has facilitated the transformation of an undeveloped desert kingdom into the worlds wealthiest nations. Vast oil revenues have permitted rapid modernization such as the welfare state. It has the worlds 6th largest gas reserves. It is the only country that women aren’t allowed to drive. Every adult women has to have a close male relative to be her† guardian† you explain them as minors with very little authority over their own life’s. The guardian is entitled to make a number of critical decisions on a women’s behalf.These include giving approval to the women to travel, to hold some types of business licenses, to study at a university or college and to work if the type of the business isn’t deemed appropriate for a women. Even when a guardians approval isn’t legally required they still sometimes ask for it. Women are also said to faced disc rimination in the courts where the testimony of one man equals that to two women and in family and inheritance law. Polygamy is permitted for men that they can divorce their wife without needing any legal justification.A women can only divorce with the consent of her husband or judicially if her husband harmed her. Cultural norms impose restrictions on women when their in public and these are enforced by the religious police the Matawa. They include requiring the women to sit in separate designed family sections in restaurants to wear a abaya which is a loose fitting full length black cloak covering the entire body and to conceal their hair, Men have to wear headdress(scarf).There is also effectively a ban on women driving. Men marry girls as young as ten in Saudi Arabia. Child marriage is believed to hinder women’s education. The dropout rates for girls increases around puberty as they exchange education for marriage. Roughly about 25% college aged young women do not attend college in 2005 and 2006 there was a 60% dropout rate. Female literacy is estimated to be around 70% compared to men with 85%. The men think that women are weak no matter how high their status’s are.Although some Saudi’s would like more freedom the women have said they didn’t want any radical change. Education is free at all levels. The school systems is composed to Elementary, intermediate, and secondary schools. A large part of the curriculum at all levels is devoted to Islam and at the secondary level students are able to follow religious or a technical track. Girls are able to attend school. The portion is reflected to in the rate of literacy which exceeds to 85% among males and 70% of females. Classes are segregated by gender.The Saudi public school religious curriculum continues on that they have hate towards in the â€Å"unbeliever â€Å" which is christian,jews,Shiites,sufis,sunni Muslims who do not follow the wahhabi doctrine, Hindus atheists and othe rs . The Saudi religious studies the curriculum is taught outside of the kingdom of Madrashed throughout the world. Critics have described the education systems as â€Å"medieval† and that their goal is to maintain the rule of the absolute monarch by casting it as the ordained protector of the faith and that Islam s at war with all the other faiths and cultures. Traditional music is generally associated with with poetry and sung collectively. Instruments include the rababah, an instrument not unlike a 3 string fiddle, and various types of percussion instruments such as the tabl(drum) and the tar(tambourine). Of the native dances the most popular is a martial line dance known as the ardah which includes lines of men frequently armed with swords or rifles dancing to the drums and the tambouries. Bedouin pottery is very popular in Saudi Arabia.Football is the national sport in Saudi Arabia scuba diving, sailing and basketball are very popular also played by both men and women. M ore traditional sports as camel racing became popular in 1970’s. A stadium in Riyadh holds races in the winter . The annual camel race began in 1974 its one of the most important sports constants and attracts animals and riders throughout the country. The conclusion is that people in the Saudi Arabia live a very rough life especially the women being controlled/disrespected by men! We should thank god everyday that we don’t live a life like they do!

Identity theft, or identity fraud, according to the United States Department of Justice, are terms that are used when referring to all forms of crime in which an individual wrongfully obtains and makes use of personal data of that other person in some way involving deception typically for personal, economic gains (National Crime Prevention Council, 2005). Research has shown that by 2004, there were on average twenty million incidents involving identity theft in the U.S alone (Joseph, 2005). How this happens with all the securities in place, is a question everyone would want to know its exact answer. However, according to a study that was released by two research bodies (Better Business Bureau and Javelin Strategy), in early January 2005, most of the theft do take place offline, which is quite opposite of what majority of people might think (Joseph, 2005). The study found out that online information theft only accounts for about 11.6% of the total identity fraud cases. This, in essence, implies that limiting your use of own computer does not help much. Nonetheless, rushing into grabbing headline scandal that involve theft of thousands of personal records, coupled with the advent of pharming and phishing these involved in the theft might go a long way to the above figures dramatically. The findings of these studies, on the other hand, are extremely troubling. These studies indicate that almost half of the identity thefts are often committed by those people known to the victims. One other study in 2004, reported that on average 655,000 complaints that were registered with the agency, 60 percent were to do with fraud and 40 percent involving complaints of theft identity. Basing on these study Phoenix-Mesa- Scottsdale, Bernardino-Ontario, Las Vegas-paradise, and Riverside-San reported the highest number of identity theft. The FTC found out that of all that reported having been victimized in the U.S 8 percent aged 60 years and above with the largest number, 30 percent, falling in the range between 18 to 30 age group (Joseph, 2005). These changes are due to the progressive dysfunction and death of nerve cells that are responsible for the storage and processing of information. Although drugs can temporarily improve memory, at present there are no treatments that can stop or reverse the inexorable neurodegenerative process. But rapid progress towards understanding the cellular and molecular alterations that are responsible for the neuron’s demise may soon help in developing effective preventative and therapeutic strategies’ (Mattson 2004). ... To avoid Alzheimer’s, Mattson suggests mental as well as physical exercise, a low calorie low saturated fat diet, and specifically targeted drugs. Although not required to understand the article, I believe it helped me to have a brief neuromotor background from my exercise science classes. This is a well cited and well written article, but definitely on the level of neuroscience. Mattson suggested ways to avoid Alzheimer’s, but lacks findings and I would recommend long term follow up studies.   ‘Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that currently affects nearly 2% of the population in industrialized countries; the risk of AD dramatically increases in individuals beyond the age of 70 and it is predicted that the incidence of AD will increase threefold within the next 50 years’ (alz.org). Alzheimer's is a brain disease that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. Symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time, becoming severe enough to interfere with daily tasks. â€Å"It’s overwhelming, worse every day,† Mrs. Dillon said in Jane Gross’ article ‘Alzheimer’s in the living room: how one family rallies to cope’, â€Å"I don’t have any life. African Americans could not receive the same education as whites. They could not socialize with whites. Jobs were limited to them. Freedom was not really free. After the Civil War, slavery ended. African Americans could not drink from the same water fountains, sit on the same park benches, go to the same school, sit together in restaurants, and could not intermingle. Rules forced African Americans to the back of the bus. African Americans could not vote, or had to pass a reading test to vote. Many whites thought segregation was equal, but segregation was not equal. The Supreme Court ruled that segregation was not equal. This did not change the minds of white people, especially in the Southern States. Other than the Jim Crow laws, the KKK and other groups limited the freedom of African Americans. If an African American was perceived as out of line, KKK or white supremacist would burn crosses on African American’s yards, beat them, or even lynch them. As a result, many African Americans were afraid to exercise their limited freedom. Fear allowed them to be kept virtual slaves to their white neighbors. During the Civil Rights Movement, Jim Crow laws started to be overturned. Even though Jim Crow laws started to be overturned, some whites did not share the opinion of the courts. Activists, black and white, trying to register people to vote, or fight for African American rights, were harassed, beaten, and even killed. Once again fear kept African Americans from freedom, but hope and defiance kept the movement going to provide more freedoms. Today, legally African Americans enjoy equal freedoms with their white counterparts. That does not mean that everyone follows the law. In American, everyone is entitled to on opinion.

The evidence further disclosed that the officers searched the room, ascertained that the accused was not present, and observed a postal uniform jacket, but left the room without seizing it. The court held that the search was illegal since the officers had neither a search warrant nor probable cause to arrest the accused. Denying the accused's motion to suppress various items of evidenc e, however, the court stated that since the officers at the time of the search already knew that the accused had recently acquired a letter carrier's uniform, no new evidence was discovered during this illegal search, so that the "fruit of the poison tree" doctrine had no application to the search. Noting that the landlord made no efforts to evict the accused until several weeks after the search, the court stated that the accused was legitimately on the premises and was entitled to invoke the right of privacy guaranteed by the Fourth Amendment. Here, neither Peppermint Patty nor Lucy had the authority (at least on these facts) to allow the police into Linus' apartment to search the premises. How A Student Can Get an A or an F in Freshman English Essay Most students know the answer to the question as to how one gets an A or an F in Freshman English class. The reasons are basically the same with how one gets either grade in their other academic subjects. Also, after going through different English classes from grade school to high school, the student should have more or less gathered ideas on how to ace or fail the subject, the criteria almost similar for each grade level of English classes the differences mainly on the difficulty level of the lessons and the complexity of the skills and performance required from the students. This essay will point out several of these factors by which the freshman student can get an A or an F in his first English class in college. These reasons are interrelated but not interdependent with each other. Meaning, the presence of all these factors in one student makes it most probable for him to get an A but the lack of one or some of them do not mean that the student would fail to get an A. An important fact to point out is that A and F occupy the extreme ends of a grading scheme, with A being the best grade and F being the worst that a student can get. It follows therefore that the reasons why a student gets an A in Freshman English are the opposites of the reasons as to why another student gets an F. Like most English subjects, Freshman English entails a lot of reading. This is to develop further the reading and comprehension skills that students have been training for since they started learning the alphabets in kindergarten. Reading is a continuous exercise that is sharpened with practice or gets rusty with the lack of it. Teachers realize this. Some reading assignments in Freshmen English include literary texts, books and articles. Students that read assigned texts diligently and religiously according to when they are supposed to be read—or even do advance and extra reading—get A during evaluation quizzes. Those who are lazy or those who rely on reading summaries when the teacher required the reading of the whole text, more than often get the F. Aside from reading, the subject requires a lot of writing on the part of the student. Freshmen English teachers like to assign paperwork for various reasons. To test whether the student read the required story, novel or essay, the teacher would assign a book report, a reaction or analysis paper of the text. Another reason is to exercise the critical thinking skills of the student. The teacher would assign papers on a variety of topics, both about the subject matter discussed in class and other topics he deems relevant for the student to know and think about. To enhance the creativity of the student, the teacher could require him to write a poem, personal essay or story. Students who comply with these writing assignments and who exert the effort to conduct research when necessary can get an A. The students that simply submit something just for the sake of complying with the requirement, or who do not submit papers at all, get F. Paying attention to the teacher’s lectures and listening to what are being discussed during class hours is another area that differentiates the A from the F student. The textbook does not contain everything that needed to be learned. The role of the teacher is also to supplement the knowledge that can be acquired through the textbook. Usually, the items that appear in quizzes and test are those which the teacher emphasizes during lectures. Also, listening to class lectures is actually a substitute for studying independently. Any student would realize that if he listens carefully during class discussion, he would not need to study as hard anymore since when all the senses are involved in the learning process, like what happens during a class discussion, more learning occurs. The student who gets A know this fact. The F student crams during exams because he prefers to daydream during class hours or be absent altogether. Genetics also play a role in differentiating the A student from the F student. It is unfair but it is a recognized fact that a high IQ can also be inherited. Smart parents usually bear smart kids. The intelligence can even be subject-specific. A father who loves Math could have a son who loves numbers as much as him. A student who loves English may have a Dad who also loves the subject and this passion is simply being passed on to the child—an A student in English. If the student is predisposed because of his genes to be naturally good in communication activities and this talent is accompanied with diligence, he will get an A in freshman English. Getting an A or an F in Freshman English is not always because of factors that pertain to the student.
